WHOLE FOODS (FRESH FIELDS)

Shapiro & Duncan, Inc. has successfully completed the plumbing and mechanical work for the construction of new and the renovation of numerous Whole Foods Market stores within the Washington metropolitan area.

Most of the remodeling projects were performed while the Markets were open for business, and had to be accomplished with minimal disruption to the operation of the market. Our scope of work for the plumbing system was to run a circuit waste and vent system, and cold water lines that feed the vegetable and fruit stands, new underground sanitary lines, clean-outs, floor and sink drains, and underground domestic water lines. In running the underground plumbing services, we had to erect dust-free temporary barriers that sealed the work area from the retail space. There was a lot of coordination needed to meet the demands of the schedule and to avoid any disruption. Most of the layout was done during normal working hours, and most of the installation was done in the evenings or early morning hours. We also installed new automatic grease recovery units and grease interceptors in the seafood departments, new three-compartment sinks with commercial garbage disposals in the seafood and deli department, as well as new hand sink and restroom fixtures. In addition, we built new water lines to the mists serving the wall-mounted vegetable and fruit cases, make-up water to the roof top dehumidification units, new welded gas service serving new owner-supplied walk-in rotisserie ovens in the deli, owner supplied ovens in the bakery, and Carrier roof top units. The ovens got new CaptiveAir commercial grease hood exhaust systems fitted with a fire suppression system by Maryland Fire Protection.

All overhead work that was out in the retail space was to be worked on in the evenings or early morning hours. All other work could be done during normal working hours. All setting of roof top equipment had to be done after hours or on weekends. Our scope of work for the HVAC system was to install new double wall lined spiral duct work off the roof top air conditioning units, welded grease duct work off the commercial cooking hoods up through the roof, new Desert Aire dehumidification units which controlled the climate temperature, Carrier electric unit heaters, Cook supply air and exhaust fans, kitchen and restroom exhaust duct work systems, and new automatic temperature control systems.

Although the scope of work in some cases was difficult and the schedule was tight, the projects were completed on time and in budget.
