The challenge
of this project was completing a major HVAC renovation
in only three months. The job entailed an existing open plenum
pneumatically controlled variable air volume (VAV) system
with two central air handling units (AHUs) that were to be
converted to a fully ducted, direct digital control (DDC)
system. Shapiro & Duncan along with our subcontractors, Kogok
Sheet Metal and TFC Controls, began coordination efforts by
meeting on site with the owner and Foulger Pratt, the general
contractor. Maintaining schedule was critical as there were
numerous drywall and painting tasks that had to be completed
when the HVAC renovation was completed.
The owner
had pre-purchased the VAV boxes, variable frequency devices,
and additional AHU motors. To meet the tight completion schedule,
we premeasured as much of the duct as possible. As ceilings
were removed, our crew followed immediately behind installing
the ductwork, VAV boxes, and controls. While this was happening,
another crew installed the new AHU motors and frequency drives.
TFC followed by installing the controls and checking out the
system. Finally, Foulger Pratt followed with the drywall and
painting contractors, successfully completing the entire project
within the three-month window and within budget.
