What happens when a customer needs new HVAC equipment, has
improperly conditioned spaces, sky-high electric costs and
no mechanical drawings or accurate space plans? He contacts
Shapiro & Duncan’s Design Build team and they come
to the rescue with the following solution:
- Performed a detailed survey of the existing equipment.
- Measured each space and determined its usage.
- Measured existing airflows.
- Located and measured the existing duct system.
- Calculated the heat load/loss and required airflow for each room.
- Provided CAD drawings of existing system.
- Provided CAD demolition drawings.
- Provided CAD design drawings.
- Replaced equipment with new, and revised duct system to provide the appropriate amount of air to each room.
- Provided final balance and as-built CAD drawings.
- Performed work while space was occupied.
In the process, an existing 100% outside air system of 25 tons was replaced with 10 ½ tons of split systems, and the total installed A/C equipment was reduced from 105 tons to 85 tons. Performing a detailed load analysis allowed S&D to reduce the overall capacity, providing costs savings on the replacement equipment and a reduction in operating costs of approximately $10,000 to $15,000 per year. New programmable thermostats were provided and each of the eight new units were equipped with economizers to allow “free cooling” with outside air when outside temperatures are acceptable and inside spaces need cooling.
This is an example of our “people performing” to address a customer’s needs and provide an appropriate design-build solution. We followed up with a proper maintenance contract to ensure that the customer realizes the maximum energy savings.
